This forest of hardwood is composed mainly by hornbeams, beech, oak and cherry trees.

Those trees are easily recognizable with the naked eye thanks to the patterns of their barks.

Oak

  • The oldest can reach 1000 years.

  • His fruit is toxic for humans but not for wild boars, squirrels and the jays like it and ensure the survival of this tree.

  • Some parts of the bark can be used for fighting the foot perpiration.

  • During the war, oak fruits were used as a substitute of coffee.

  • Beech

  • The beech absorbs a lot of sunlight to have a sufficient growth, leaving few chances to the others plants for having a correct development around it.

  • The beech is toxic, except beechnuts that some animals really like: squirrels, wild boars and woodpeckers. 

  • During the war, beechnuts were used to make margarine.

  • The wood of the beech is adapted to the fabrication of furnitures, floors, spoons and toys.

  • It can reach 40m of height.

  • The beech lives between 200 and 300 years.

  • The wood of the beech was used for the printing of new books. The word “boek” in Dutch, meaning “book”, is derived frrom the word “beuk” which means “beech”.

  • Do not eat more than 20 beechnuts because you could have a headache.

  • The beech is the giant of the forest. With its crown with splayed shape, it overshaws the environment around him.

Hornbeam

  • The hornbeam is the most known tree in the family of beechs
  • The hornbeam grows slowly and can live until 200 years.

  • The hornbeam is a native tree that has been living in Europe for more than 10 millions years.

Cherry tree

The cherry tree (Prunus avium, synonyme: Cerasus avium) is a tree that can reach 20 m of height belonging to the rosaceae family (Rosaceae). He grows in Belgium and also in Holland. Every part of the plant, except for the ripe fruit, contains small quantities of toxics substances.

Before, there were a lot of orchards composed of cherry trees in the landscape. This tree was also very appreciated for the fabrication of furnitures, but this trend has become obselete.
